Wheels come off for Roeder
July 29th 2006

Final score from St. James Park:

Newcastle United 2 (Ameobi 68, Luque 72 pen) PSV Eindhoven 3 (Farfan 16, Hesselink 41, Culina 49)

Glenn Roeder's pre-season preperation took a backwards step this afternoon as dutch champions PSV raced into a three goal lead after dominating play at St. James Park.

A host of substiutions and a step-up in play from the home side saw a late comeback when Ameobi and Luque both scored but it wasn't enough to salvage a draw.

Damien Duff played an hour and went close on a number of occasions as did Ameobi and Emre, the latter of which saw a goal-bound effort cleared off the line when the score was 0-3.

Another Bridge on the Tyne?
July 29th 2006

Plenty of transfer rumors have engulfed the UK papers the last few days, many of which link us with a host of forwards and left backs.

With West Ham's reluctance to sell Dean Ashton it appears we have turned our attentions to his strike partner Marlon Harewood, who blew hot and cold last season despite some important goals for the Hammers.

However, one of our sources say the next signing for Newcastle United wont be a forward, but rather a left-back as cover for Babayaro (who appears to be "injured" at least once a month). Wayne Bridge is one of the front runners but don't rule out a surprise return for Oliver Bernard who can be brought in for free, as Roeder looks to allocate transfer funds elsewhere.

UEFA Cup 2nd Round
July 28th 2006

The draw for the Second Round of the Uefa Cup was held at 7:30am EST this morning and Newcastle United will face Ventsplis of Latvia. The first leg will be played in Latvia on August 10th, with the return leg at St. James Park on August 24th.

Newcastle were one of the seeded teams and there avoided any of the "bigger" teams, including Marseille, Club Brugge and Grasshoppers Zurich.

Canaries 1 - 2 Toon
July 26th 2006

Newcastle United won their first pre-season friendly of the season as they defeated Norwich City 2-1, a reverse of the score line last time we played them at Carrow Road.

Peter Ramage's first senior goal and a second from Charles N'Zogbia put the game in little doubt, despite a late consolation goal from ex-Spurs midfielder Paul McVeigh.

The lads will go on to play PSV Eindhoven on Saturday with a Mr Damien Duff expected to play some part in the game.

News Round-up
July 25th 2006

Tomorrow, Newcastle United will play their first friendly of the season as they travel to Norwich for Craig Fleming's testimonial. Quite why the long-serving defender has chose Newcastle United to have his 90 minutes of fame with is unclear, perhaps Ipswich were busy...

While Roeder will take a relatively strong squad with him, Given, Babayaro, Emre, Shola and Luque are a few of the big names left at home, meaning Newcastle will take only one striker - reserve team player Carl Finnigan.

Meanwhile, Damien Duff (squad number 11 - with Milner going back to 16), will make his debut against PSV on Saturday. PSV drew Stroke City 0-0 this evening.

Chops vs. Caig
July 24th 2006

Sunday evening saw a rematch of two former players as the Vancouver Whitecaps took on Cardiff City in the Inaugural Whitecaps Nations Cup.

Representing Vancouver was our former third-team keeper Tony Caig while now on Cardiff's books is Michael Chopra who has been in fine goal scoring form for them since joining.

However, in the end it was Caig who got one over his ex-team mate by blocking Chopra's penalty in a 3-1 shoot out win for the Whitecaps following a goalless 90 minutes.

Not the end of the spending?
July 23rd 2006

With the Damien Duff deal signed and sealed, Newcastle are now turning their attentions to the striking problem which was temporarily forgot yesterday.

Numerous sources today are quoting an imminent deal for West Hams Dean Ashton and Germany's golden boot winner Miroslav Klose.

Meanwhile going the other way, interest from others are pushing Marseille to make a bid for Jean Alain Boumsong and Albert Luque's no show yesterday was an interesting turn of events, with his former club Deportivo La Coruna supposedly interested in taking him back for a cut price.

Intertoto Cup - Final Score
July 22nd 2006

Final score from the Åråsen stadion:

Lillestrøm 0 - Newcastle United 3 (Ameobi 30, 38, Emre 90)

Newcastle United made it through to the UEFA Cup after soundly beating a poor Lillestrøm side 3-0. After an indifferent first leg, Newcastle pressured Lillestrøm from the first whistle and got their just reward on 30 minutes when Ameobi calmly stroked a rebound home after N'Zogbia's first shot was parried. Eight minutes later and Ameobi tapped home a second and the tie was effectively over. See those goals here.

Emre curled home a fantastic third with seconds to go, to cap off an excellent display from the team which by this point included substitutes Butt, Pattinson and Moore.

Newcastle United will be entered into the 1st round draw of the UEFA cup on Thursday, July 27th. Check back at ToonArmyUSA for updates.

Duff Man
July 21st 2006

Update- Damien Duff officially became a Newcastle United player on Saturday and will be unveiled to the press on Monday. According to a statement to the stock exchange, the deal cost United just 5 million pounds ($9.2 million dollars).

Chelsea & Ireland midfielder Damien Duff is set to complete a surprise switch to Newcastle United today after the toon snatched him away from Spurs in the 11th hour. The deal is approximately 10 million pounds ($18.5 million dollars).

A pacey player who can operate on either flank (although he prefers the left), Duff is likely to be more of a traditional winger, supplying the crosses for our non-existent strike force (bet Shearer wishes we had him a few years earlier).

In addition to joining up with ex-team mates such as Given, Carr, Babayaro and Parker, it's believed that Duff prefers a move north - a refreshing change .

Hard to be negative when players of his quality arrive at SJP but one does have to question spending so much money on an already packed midfield, when everyone is clear on our striking problems and Duffs injury record isn't excellent. Read the full story here.

Harry's Rant
July 19th 2006

The World Cup was a bitter-sweet experience for many toon fans - minus the sweet.

Englands quarter-final exit to Portugal combined with Michael Owens long-term injury made it an instantly forgettable tournament.

That aside, there is plenty to discuss about this summers games in Germany and that's exactly what our man Harry has done in this months "Harry's Rants".

If you're not familar with Harry, check out his page and keep visitng ToonArmyUSA for monthly updates.

Transfer Update
July 18th 2006

Although the Club were being heavily tipped to make an announcement of a new signing on Monday July 17th – there was still no transfer activity at St James’ Park today (July 18th). It seems that Roeder is determined to hold out for only high caliber players and/or we are having trouble attracting top quality talent.

Many news outlets were heavily tipping Newcastle to sign Shaun Wright-Phillips in a season long loan deal from Chelsea but it appears that a move by Spurs to sign Damian Duff has hampered this deal.

In other speculation Dean Ashton of West Ham and Jared Borgetti of Bolton, are also being linked to Newcastle as potential transfer targets – as the club look to replace Alan Shearer and Michael Owen.

Some news sources are indicating that any transfer deals are likely linked to the successful outcome of the Intertoto Cup game against Lillestrøm, which currently stands at 1-1 from the first leg.

Over before it's started?
July 15th 2006

Final score from St. James Park:

Newcastle United 1 (Luque 50) - Lillestrøm 1 (Koren 21)

ToonArmy USA Exclusive - Roeder Press Release
July 14th 2006

From your ToonArmyUSA Roving Reporter in attendance at the Glenn Roeder Talk-in at Kingston Park on Thursday, July 13.

"On Monday, July 17, NUFC will anounce the signing of a new player to wear the black and white shirt". He will be well-known (a big name) with EPL experience. Another 5 new players will join the club before the season kicks off on August 19.

Milner and Luque will both feature in the Lillestrom match on Saturday.

The defence will be Given; Carr, Taylor, Bramble, Babayaro. No other players were mentioned by Glenn for Saturday. Strangely, he didn't want to talk about his choice in midfield for Saturday. With an abundance of midfield players, maybe he hasn't decided on his starting midfield.

He said that Milner was very fit on the first day of training, and he was very impressed by him..........sounds to me like he is definitely staying on as a Mag. He also said that Taylor was "looking the part", although he needs to improve technically. He is a winner and will improve being surrounded by better players. He also said Taylor "enjoys hurting you".

He said Luque needs to repay the fans........so it appears he will be giving him a chance to show what he has (not that anyone is interested in buying him anyway). He did say, Luque's hamstring injury was one of the worst he had ever seen.

Glenn thought the fixtures to Christmas were "to die for". Let's hope he is right and we get the results for a good start.

He did refer to Owen, Boumsong, and Moore, as well as Lee Clark's role this season, and Terry Mac.

Expect more roving reporting from our man in Toon.

United!
July 12th 2006

So another season starts on Saturday, with no doubt more up’s and down’s than your average rollercoaster.

While there have been many concerns this summer about the lack of transfer activity, we must remember there is still a month to go before the Premiership season kicks off and new signings or not, our next opposition from Norway shouldn’t pose too much of a problem.

Having seen the likes of Viana, Guivarch and Marcelino (to name put a few) sign for millions and leave for next to nothing in recent seasons, you can’t blame Roeder and Shepard for waiting to get the right people in.

Plus, if any of our momentum from the end of last season carries over and if half of our long term injuries clear up (although with Dyer and Owen looking to miss vast amounts of the season this doesn’t look likely!) then we could be in for a solid season, with a good cup run or two.

So whether it’s Owen, Ameobi or Harper in attack, lets get behind the team and give them our support.

Howay the lads!

First Opponents Confirmed
July 9th 2006

Final score from the Keflavíkurvöllur Stadium, Iceland - Lillestrøm 2 - IBK Keflavik 2 (Lillestrøm win 6-3 on aggregate).

That means Lillestrøm will be our first competitive opponents of the season. They visit St. James Park next Saturday, with the return leg a week later.

World Cup Interview
July 7th 2006

Our club president was lucky enough to get tickets for the 2006 World Cup in Germany and just as the tournament starts to wind down, we asked him a few questions about his experiences. Read the full interview here.

He also took a number of pictures from the Korea vs. France and the England vs. Sweden games. These pictures can be viewed here.

Owen KO
July 6th 2006

Hard to think of a season without crippling injuries, and 2006/2007 looks like it wont be any different.

Media reports from England suggest that Michael Owen could miss the whole of the season as he now recovers from a minor operation which he had to have before he has his main op to repair his anterior cruciate.

So with Shearer and Chopra gone and the Intertoto cup less than two weeks away, the search for a new striker (or three) is well and truly on. It looks likely that Milner and Luque will step up to the plate, the latter on which certainly having a lot to prove if he is to have a future on Tyneside.

Ice Melt
July 2nd 2006

Final score from Norway - Lillestrøm 4 - IBK Keflavik 1.

Lillestrøm appear to be heading for Tyneside after beating Icelandic side IBK Keflavik despite not playing a full team. Although IBK won 4-1 in the previous round, they look unlikely to turn over this large deficit. The second leg is Saturday, July 7th.
