All three contenders continue to battle it out for the Premiership although you get the impression that Newcastle are being seen as the also ran. The order hasn't changed that much in the last few months. Nufc.com has listed the remaining fixtures for each team. MU appears to have the hardest schedule, especially with their Champions League commitments as well, but their 4-0 drubbing of Liverpool shows they can't be counted out. The Toon had some spectacular performances against Charlton and Blackburn, although the Everton loss didn't help. They will have to keep on winning to be sure they are still a contender in May. We have to hope that MU and Arsenal will lose a few more games or at worst draw some.
The Everton game was a big disappointment and you have to agree with Mark Harper when he said that the ref probably ruined our chances for the Premiership. The penalty assessed against Woodgate was very dodgy. Both goalkeepers played a blinder. Kerr had a good game. O'Brien didn't. (Why weren't Griffin or Hughes picked?). Woodgate has probably paid back his transfer fee already - another consistent performance in defence, a great pass to Robert, and a thumping header that should have gone in. The strikers never really clicked - Bellamy trying to shoot from 30 yards out!! Well, lads, still six games left.
So it looks as though Sunderland are for the drop in about 30 days time, although nufc.com says it could come as early as this weekend if they lose to Birmingham. A shame because we'd really like to see the three northeastern clubs represented in the Premiership. The area has always provided some of the finest players in English football, many of whom have often gone on to teams in the south. There are really only four regions in England represented in the Premiership. London (with six teams); Merseyside (with Liverpool, the two Manchesters, Everton, and you could also add Bolton and Blackburn); the Midlands (with Birmingham, Aston Villa, and West Brom); and the northeast.
After a few days of speculation, Alan Shearer decided not to pursue playing for England again. Hard to know whether his remarks after the Barcelona game were a trial balloon or just off the cuff musings. Predictably the southern media boo-birds sharpened their pencils at the thought of getting after Big Al again. But a number of reasoned heads felt that it wasn't in his best interests to stage a comeback. And he agreed. As the chief strike force he always comes in for his share of trips, kicks, elbows, and shirt pulling and to have to go through an international season putting up with this, as well as the threat of injuries, was simply not in his best interests. Nor for the Toon either. Since giving up the England captaincy he has played some of his best football for Newcastle and is on track for one of his best seasons. He leads by example, and is a strong supporter of the pride that should go with playing for your country.
Children at a Norfolk school were banned from throwing snowballs unless they asked the target's permission. Can you imagine Bellamy asking the ref's permission to swear at him? Would be cheaper than a fine.
JJ's grandmother wants commentators to pronounce his name as "Jeenas" and not "Janus".
